Michael Jackson’s Vitiligo Discussion (6)

2007 August 30
by the floacist

Discussion from the wonderful [Vicky] discussing the topic with us. Note: I lost the post she was responding too…lol.

1. If Michael bleached his skin for cosmetic reasons, he would have stopped in 1991 when his skin resembled a normal “white” color.

2. He didn’t, his skin is now without pigment…which is why the flash of a camera will make him look whiter than the whitest white person. If you can find me a soul on earth that wishes to be ghost white, please tell me about this person.

3. If Michael bleached his skin for cosmetic reasons, he wouldn’t be the only person we know of that has made this transformation without a skin disease.

4. Michael went through depigmentation therapy with the assistance of his dermatologist. Because the patches from Vitiligo strip all pigment from the skin, when going through depigmentation therapy you have to use the medication until all pigment is gone. Otherwise, patches will still be seen. Depigmentation therapy is merely a way of speeding up what will happen anyway.

5. During the Thriller era Michael literally wore layers of facial makeup. So much that it would bleed onto his stage costumes and even his microphone during the Victory tour. Why? Guess.

This is Michael’s makeup kit during the Victory Tour. Yeah, for real. That’s not normal coverup is it? Nope, I use foundation too…mine doesn’t come in that kind of container. Looks like a “special kind.”

The flash of the camera captured just how much of this stuff Michael is wearing. Under normal lighting, and in most photos from this tour his skin appeared fine. Little did we know at the time, huh? Look at his pants, his microphone.

Michael under normal lighting, looks fine.

6. Michael’s dermatologist confirmed he had Vitiligo and Discoid Lupus (this is what caused his rosy red cheeks during the Thriller era) during a deposition concerning the 1993 allegations.

7. The medication used for this process is only available via dermatologist.

8. A dermatologist will not risk years of schooling and practice by giving a black guy that wants to be white a strong medication that could harm him, then covering it up by saying it was vitiligo. It’s not plastic surgery which is what most people get for vanity reasons, you don’t have to need plastic surgery to get it. A dermatologist will not personally give you anything they don’t feel you need.

9. If it were as simple as buying bleaching products from the store, believe me…more black people would have bleached their skin already with the “success” that Michael has had. They do it in parts of Africa and come out looking like hell.

10. Michael on Oprah said “I don’t want to go into my medical history because that’s private.” He probably didn’t want to go into the details because he felt that people wouldn’t understand. Michael isn’t very good at explaining things outloud in a way that people will accept.

11. Michael’s issues with his appearance have never seemed to mirror someone that hates their ethnicity. It stemmed from teasing, growing up on camera…things like that. As soon as he was old enough, he got his nose done…he had nose issues. All of Michael’s idols were black men. Michael sang black music…took part in all the black trends (afro, jheri curl..ect). Michael didn’t up and decide in 1985 that he wanted to be a white man.

12. Michael has vitiligo. What causes the doubt is the lack of explanation on how it progressed.

except for point 10, all very good reasons. if i could i’d direct every hater naysayer and doubtfully minded person to this exact site. while point 11 is in limbo for me, i won’t get into any arguments & just say this is well written, researched, and compiled.

michael was beauitiful when he was black and he was also beauiful when he had lighter skin. Its obvious he suffered from vitiligo.
I am white, but i like tanning my skin. I love dark skin. That doesn’t mean i am racist and i want to be a black man.
Also, if black people whould like to have lighter skin, that doesnt mean they r racist and want to be white.
Unfortunately we are living in comunities that consider whitening or darkening skin a racist act but slamming and hurting and accusing an icon and a humanitarian like michael jackson a normal thing and not a racist act.
I am really sadened from what is happening in this world

People have no right to accuse Michael of bleaching his skin. It’s not even medically possible. People who say he bleached his skin are dumb, uneducated, and narrow minded. About 85% of the world doesn’t know what Vitiligo is. The topic Vitiligo needs be spread. People need to raise awareness of this skin condition. It needs to be put in books, magazines, television, and even taught about in school. Most people never even heard of Vitiligo and it gets to me when people don’t know what it is. I have a friend and she told me the only thing she didn’t like about Michael is that “he doesn’t want to be black” and that he had some weird surgery to turn his skin white. I told her that wasn’t true. I said to her that he has a skin disorder called Vitiligo that turned his skin white. She didn’t believe me. She said “oh, that’s not true. They’re just trying to cover him up”. I tried to convince her that he has a skin disorder and she didn’t believe me. That really pissed me off. That’s one thing I don’t like about her. She thinks she knows everything. She even thinks Disney World is for babies, which it isn’t. Disney World is for people of all ages.

Hey Flo, I just wanted to tell you directly – thanks for spending all this time & effort to assemble these photo essays, transcripts, analysis, etc. It’s a phenomenal amount of work. I honestly think your website has single-handedly dissipated a whole lot of BS pertaining to MJ on the internet, namely skin bleaching accusations. I swear to God Raymone Bain should add you to the payroll.

    to the floacist!

thanks for that thorough and revealing piece of information! But I’d like to add another aspect. The tabloids always try to convince people Michael would have turned from a black man into a white woman. Around the same time his skin got lighter he also became more and more feminin or should I say androgyne. His hair got longer. Could it be that not just Michaels skin is affected but his eyebrowes, eyelashes and lipcolor. That would explain why Michael chose to look that way because without Mascara, Lipstick and Eyeliner he wouldn’t have a face and he would look like a wall paper?!?

Isn’t it pretty arrogant for (white) people to claim that Michael wanted to be white?
I mean, come on – what kind of a statement is that to make? Michael is very honest, so for him to claim he has something that he doesn’t, would be an insult to people with vitiligo, and he’s not the sort of person to do that.
It’s obvious that he has vitiligo, and this website’s brilliant. It’s just a shame that the truth is limited to a few websites that most likely only fans will read.

More people need to be made aware. I get so tired of reading/hearing negative things about Michael.
People need to wake up to the truth.
    He deserves love and respect

i think he has really a skin disease!! because in an interview he said: “i am glad to be black! i’m proud of myself because i am a black man!”
and in another interview with oprah he was almost crying and he said: i can’t help it because people say bad things against me and i don’t want to be white i have just a disease…”
he is a good person but a lot of people don’t understand him but one day they will because he is the best!
Michael you don’t have to care about what they say about you because there are a lot of people who love you! you are the best singer there ever was and you will be it! love u from the bottom of my heart! <3<3

Hey, I get picked on to at school. I am in first year and lost of the people in my year are quite mean to me. I always try my hardest to protect Michael, But most of the time I am out-numbered and I can’t get my say in.
People who call Michael ‘Wacko-Jacko’ are sickos. They should treat Michael the way they would like people to treat them. Don’t they understand that it hurts to be called names or to be disrespected. I pray that one day, The people who disrespect Michael will have to go through what he has been through … The abuse, The rude nick-Names, The rumors

I am Michael’s No.1 fan. I know everything about him from his No.1 selling album to his shoe size. I also have over 200 Michael Jackson && Jackson 5 songs on my iPod x I know every lyric to all of them x

I know in my heart that Michael would NEVER deliberately make his skin white. He is a honest, loving and Innocent man. I am Scottish and I am white, I hate people who make themselves darker on purpose. It doesn’t make you look more attractive to be more tanned than you already are. Most people in my school have orange skin as they get spray tans so much. It doesn’t change the person inside of you if you look tanned. Why waste your time damaging your skin in sunbeds when you could be improving the man/woman that you really are ??

If you don’t believe that Michael Jackson has ‘Vitiligo’ watch this video … Maybe this will change your mind.

I am so sick of people who continue to assert that MJ bleached his skin because he had a ‘white complex’ or something. I am Indian and having a few family members with the disease I know that it deeply affects your self esteem. The only way to aesthetically deal with it is to either cover the white patches with concealer or bleach off the whole skin the colour of the patches (which will be white). Michael had the option of doing the latter which he did.
It is not the poor guy’s fault that the condition does not afflict white people or is at least not as noticeable. The media’s ignorance on anything “non white” made out as a character flaw in a coloured person. How typical!!!!

The makeup that you can see in his kit is called Dermablend. This is a high-pigment makeup created to cover burns, scars and skin discolorations. Many people with Vitiligo use this product, it’s sort of a cover stick for the entire face. Because it makes the entire surface of your skin one color, you have to use a few shades to avoid looking mask-like but it is very difficult to achieve a natural look. You also have to provide color for everything else – lips, eye lashes, bush, eyeshadow. Michael used more and more stylized makeup as a result – a luxury most people on the street don’t have. Why pretend you are not wearing any when you can change your style to incorporate it? As his skin lightened more evenly, he used lighter and lighter shades of the product (which comes in tones for a variety of skin colors but can go to a very very fair as well) to match his current overall pigmentation. It’s an interesting side note than although it is an expensive makeup requiring multiple shades and its own unique setting powder, many cross-dressers and female impersonators use Dermablend to cover heavy beard shadow, heavy blocked-out eyebrows and other masculine traits not easy to cover with drug store pancake or liquid foundations.

Also, for doubters, look really closely at his wrist in the picture from the Oprah video above. You can see a distinct line of demarcation where the vitiligo skin ends and normally pigmented skin begins. You will also notice that it is not just around the wrist, but goes up into the palm of the hand. If he had bleached his hand, the line of demarcation would be evenly around the wrist and would be far enough up the arm that no dark skin would show.

Michael Jackson did have Vitiligo and looking back at his interviews, he was open and honest about it but people would not listen. I pray that God will make those who are guilty of misjudging him ashamed for being so cruel. It literally breaks my heart.
I think God is allowing these things to surface now. Why… I don’t know. But I have a feeling that the truths about a lot of things are going to come out.
I agree with LINZI… not only is it arrogant of white people but it’s stupid of them also. But this comes as no surprise. Stupidity, ignorance, and I’d like to add fear, is the root of many evils. God help the human race!
