She’s back: Janet Jackson is a pop legend.

Sexual tension reverberates throughout Discipline, Janet’s latest (* * * out of four), as she works out the kinks on the dance floor but saves some for the bedroom. After two straight lackluster outings, she switches up her creative team. In place of longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, she and co-executive producer/boyfriend Jermaine Dupri enlist songwriters/producers Rodney Jerkins, Ne-Yo, Stargate, Tricky Stewart and The Dream to help her get her mojo back.

The bumping club grooves and quirky sound effects mostly work well with her breathy vocals and erotic lyrics. A heavier dose of Missy Elliott, who shows up for the saucy The 1, would have really spiced things up. On the masochistic title tune, Janet begs for punishment. What the naughty girl really hopes is to get back to being the chart dominatrix that she once was.
