LONDON—Michael Jackson’s former personal assistant told a British court Friday that a Bahraini sheik who is now suing the singer was a generous friend, eager to give Jackson money and other gifts.
Grace Rwaramba said Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa referred to Jackson as his brother and frequently offered the singer gifts and money.

“He would say, ‘What can I do for my brother?’ ‘What can I give the children?’” Rwaramba said. “Mr. Jackson had a back pain and he told me to get Tiger Balm for him.”

Rwaramba, who also was nanny to Jackson’s three children, said she considered the sheik’s behavior “sweet.”

She was testifying as a defense witness in a $7 million lawsuit brought against Jackson by Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain. The sheik says Jackson reneged on a contract to produce an album, a candid autobiography and a stage play after accepting millions in advances. Jackson claims the money was a gift.

The money at issue includes sums of $35,000 and $1 million paid into Rwaramba’s bank account by the sheik. Rwaramba said the money was intended for Jackson, who did not have a bank account of his own.

Rwaramba said she was “flabbergasted” when she received the first payment of $35,000, which she considered a large sum.

She said the sheik “apologized that it was a little. He said next time it would be more.”

The court heard that Al Khalifa paid for hotel rooms for Jackson and his entourage and trips to Toys R Us to buy Christmas presents for the singer’s guests.  Rwaramba said the sheik never suggested any of money would have to be paid back.

Jackson, 50, and the 33-year-old sheik first made contact when the King of Pop was fending off accusations of child molestation in California and Al Khalifa offered to help him. Once Jackson was cleared of the charges in June 2005, Al Khalifa invited him to the small, oil-rich Gulf state to escape the media spotlight.

Al Khalifa says he gave Jackson millions of dollars in all to help shore up his finances and subsidize Jackson’s lifestyle in Bahrain—including more than $300,000 for a “motivational guru.”

Al Khalifa, an amateur songwriter, says the pair even moved into the same palace to work on music together.

But Jackson dropped the project in 2006, leaving Bahrain and pulling out of the contract. Jackson’s lawyers are arguing that the musician wasn’t bound by the deal because the contract was signed on behalf of 2 Seas Records, a venture which never got off the ground.

Jackson is due to take the witness stand at London’s High Court on Monday. His lawyers had asked for him to give evidence by video link from the U.S., citing an unspecified medical condition.

But lawyer Robert Englehart told the judge on Thursday that Jackson’s doctors had cleared him to travel.

Sheikh Abdulla claims Mr Jackson reneged on an agreement

Michael Jackson could be made to fly to the High Court in London to testify in a breach of contract case, despite his doctor saying he is unfit to travel.

The court heard the singer was waiting on test results about an unspecified condition and that “even in a best-case scenario it would be unwise to travel”.

However, lawyers for Sheikh Abdulla Bin Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa said he could be “bandaged up” and appear in person.

The King of Bahrain’s second son claims Mr Jackson reneged on a music deal.

He is suing the performer for £4.7 million, claiming that under the agreement, an album, stage play and candid autobiography were to be produced.

‘Rightly sceptical’

Mr Jackson’s lawyer, Robert Englehart, has asked that his client can give his testimony by video link from the US.

Mr Englehart showed the judge, Mr Justice Sweeney, a letter from Mr Jackson’s doctor which was not read out in open court.

The judge told the court the letter suggested that Mr Jackson “may or may not have a condition” and that the doctor was waiting for test results.
The doctor has advised that Jackson would not be fit to travel regardless of the results.

Sheikh Abdulla is due to give evidence on Thursday

But medical experts consulted by the defence team said that pathology results relating to such a condition would usually take 48 hours, Sheikh Abdulla’s lawyer Bankim Thanki said.

As Mr Jackson had seen the doctor ten days ago, Sheikh Abdulla was “rightly sceptical” about the doctor’s letter, Mr Thanki added.

The defence team’s experts also said that, even if test results were positive, it would be possible for Mr Jackson to fly to London with “suitable dressings”.

Mr Justice Sweeney has adjourned the case until Thursday when he will decide whether Jackson must give his evidence in person or by video link.
Also on Thursday, Sheikh Abdullah is scheduled to give evidence against Mr Jackson.

And the singer’s former nanny Grace Rwaramba, who was due to fly into London from the US on Tuesday night, will appear for Mr Jackson.

If Mr Jackson is allowed to give his evidence by video link, it will probably take place at 1400 GMT on Monday and Tuesday, the judge added.

Mutual agreement

Mr Thanki said Sheikh Abdulla felt “a strong sense of personal betrayal” after forming “a close personal relationship” with the singer.

The sheikh invited Mr Jackson, his children and personal staff to stay in Bahrain in June 2005 following his acquittal on child abuse charges in the US.

The King of Bahrain’s son said he had planned to revive the singer’s career with songs he had written himself.

These included a charity single in aid of the victims of Hurricane Katrina that was recorded but never released.

Mr Jackson contests Sheikh Abdulla’s claims, saying there was no valid agreement and that the case was based on “mistake, misrepresentation and undue influence”.

He has said no project was ever finalised and that any payments made to him were “gifts”.

The case, which is being tried in London by mutual agreement, is due to wrap up by the end of the month.

Well I’m just glad he will be in court on Monday to testify..If he says there wasn’t a contract then he needs to go and speak for himself and not let others do it for him.

Well, I’ve read that the details of the ammount of money the Sheik wants Michael to pay back includes little things like icecream and dinners… this is a crazy word.

I just dont understand why Flo said she is not sorry for him.

this whole thing is a waste of time. Listing things like ice cream…are you serious?? What a slap in the face. Whats next, he gonna charge MJ for the toilet paper he used? And no you shouldn’t feel sorry for Michael, feel sorry for that Prince and those who would/have betrayed Michael and his trust.

LOL@charge MJ for the toilet paper…
I know I was raised to believe if I gave a GIFT to someone then I am not to expect nothing in return for it and if someone gave me a GIFT then I am not obligated to give them anything in return. But hey that’s just me, maybe other people were raised differently. I just hope Michael learns to BEWARE OF A WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING!!
